season is upon us, with Cardiff City now playing in a difficult and highly
competitive Division. I don’t usually make too many comments about
football (because basically what I know about soccer could be written on
one side of a postage stamp) but I think this is going to be a tough season
where our supporters and players will be severely tested. When the times
get tough, and I think they will, we will need to remember the extreme satisfaction
we got from supporting the team last season and hope that will get us through.
No predictions, but if we finish in the top half of the division I will
be more than happy. So, a draw away against Rotherham was a good start.
that’s the last time you’ll get my views on football this season.
Promise. From now on it’s all about Bluebirds DownUnder.
Since all the
excitement of the Play-off Final, we’ve had;

BDU Soccer Team..
posted the reports on the Wolves game and the Brisbane gathering on the
website. Both events were highly successful and seem to have been greatly
enjoyed by all those involved. Check them out. The CCSC Shop has been great
in providing us with a full kit for the team at a greatly reduced price.
They even went to the trouble of getting ‘Bluebirds Downunder’
embroidered on the shirts, which are last seasons’ away strip. Thanks
to all our mates in CCSC, and also to Nat White for bringing them from Wales
Next match is against Nottingham Forest on Sunday 7th September at Centennial
Park Kick off 11am. We want to make this one a bit of a social event, with
a barbeque and picnic after the game. So, even if you are not playing, bring
the family and come along for a great Sunday afternoon out in Centennial
Park. Contact Steve (Buttocks) Hewitson for more details. firstname.lastname@example.org
New players always welcome.
Venues Organiser Nic Mather has been busy finding a better venue for future
gatherings. The main problem with the Bayview Tavern is it’s location.
Also, the fact that the management isn’t really that interested in
helping us out, although they are happy to take our beer money. Nic has
found the Kauri Hotel, a smaller pub in Glebe, and it may better meet our
needs. The landlord Tristan is keen to do anything within reason to have
us make it our new home, and he is currently working on getting Brains Beer
imported. (seriously) The Italian chef is learning how to make faggots,
mushie peas, chips and gravy, and we are currently in contact with SA Brains
in Cardiff to get beer mats, posters, t shirts and other Brains merchandise.
So, that’s where we’ll be having our next Sydney gathering. We’ll
check the hotel out, see what you think of it, and see if it meets our very
high standards. Can’t promise the Brains and the faggots will be in
place by then, but it should be a great night.

then Melbourne, now Brisbane. Monday August 4 saw our first gathering
at the Pig & Whistle in beautiful downtown Brisbane. What the gathering
lacked in quantity was certainly made up for by the quality of those attending,
all long-term avid City supporters who were in Brisbane for a variety
of reasons. Big thank you to DaveS for organizing it. Funniest
moment of the evening came when we were joined in the bar by ‘Jacks’
Carl and Sarah Morris from Swansea and Ystalyfera. The couple were just
off a plane that day direct from Heathrow and after a few hours ‘kip’
in a Brisbane hotel had decided to go walkabout. First bar they found
was the Pig & Whistle. “F@ck Me!!! “ was all Carl could
yell as he spotted the Bluebird revellers. “I’m a cop from Swansea
and I’ve come out here on my holidays to get away from you Cardiff
bastards!!!! First boozer I get into and it’s full of bloody City
supporters celebrating promotion.” Carl and Sarah soon put it behind
him and joined in with the fun. Sarah secretly admitted to Club Captain
Rich later that deep down she was actually a Cardiff supporter but that
she also went for Swansea just to keep Carl happy. For pictures and more

Bluebirds Downunder goes dot.com
to Paul Sims in Cardiff for all the great work he does to keep our website
current. We have now had more than 3000 ‘hits’ on the site and
it has hardly been going more than three months. Paul and his wife have
recently had a little girl Natasha so life for Paul has a number of new
challenges. Nevertheless, his commitment to our club is undaunted and we
get a lot of positive comments from visitors to our site. One of the best
features of the site is the Message Board. It’s a great way to communicate
with other Bluebirds DownUnder. So, please check it out and COMMUNICATE!!!
don’t forget Pauls main website, Worldwide Welsh, for a great read
on everything that’s currently happening in Wales
DownUnder flag goes on the road..
wizkid that is Dave Povall has now got a Bluebirds DownUnder flag made up
and appearing at games in UK. Look out for it on any TV footage you see
of Cardiff City, and of course, if you are lucky enough to be at one of
the games, introduce yourself to Dave. (He won’t be hard to spot.)
Povz hopes that any Sth Wales based Bluebirds DownUnder will make contact
with him and get across to our Cardiff home, the Victoria Park in Canton
for drinks with him before and after the game. Contact Dave on firstname.lastname@example.org
Also, if you are home for any of the games, make sure you catch up with
him. He’d be devastated if you didn’t.
now have over 70 registered members in the club, and a mailing list of people
interested in the club which is too long to even count. All registered members
receive a Contact List to enable them to keep in touch plus honorary membership
of Valley Rams. This is a reciprocal arrangement and allows you to book
seats on their buses to away games if you are ever back in Wales.
about it really. We will be having an Organising Group meeting on 18 August
at 6pm at the Kauri Hotel, (that’s just before the gathering starts
at 7pm) and after that we’ll give you a full report on what’s
coming up, including details on Wales v Italy function and other future
events. Let’s make our first Kauri Hotel gathering a big success, and,
if your there, it will be.
